Ya know, I just picked up my copy of DC's issue of Blue Bettle #26 and tried to read. After about two pages, I discovered that that wasn't going to happen. It was all in spanish. I look at the cover and then see the Special Spanish issue logo and think "huh, my comic shop must have pulled the wrong one for me." A quick call later and I find out that nope, DC decided to print an all mostly all spanish story and sell it to their english speaking customers with an english script in the back. WTF!!!!
Am I supposed to be okay with this? Am I supposed to think "wow that's clever"? I know he's a spanish speaking character but being a guy that buys a book for the story, art and the fact that I like the characters, I could care less that they pull this kind of stunt. I could care less that he's spanish or whatever for that matter. What I do care about is buying a comic and not being able to read it. That's NOT cool. When creators put a comic together the point is to not do anything that will cause the reader to bounce out of the experience and realize their reading a comic. In this case, I'm supposed to flip back and forth just to see what the heck is being said. GRRRRRRR! You know, if they'd just done this for a few pages, cool. I'd be down with that. Doing it for 90% of the book, that's just insulting to the all non-spanish speaking customers that live in a english speaking country.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all of my DC titles now. I know it's one instance to point at but I'm really pissed at them. It's insulting. That's like making a Russian speaking tv show and putting on American tv and thinking everyone will watch and enjoy. The problem with doing this in a comic is, I'm a collector so they know I'm gonig to buy it and not be able to enjoy it. They know they're breaking a cardinal rule in comics.
I keep thinking this was just a stupid idea trying to get some kinda media coverage but do you risk loosing readers for that? I guess you do. Oh well....
